The New Vexel Definition1. Vexels- what are they?
Vexels are layered raster shapes of solid colour or gradients/ solid shapes/ raster shapes with look of vector.
The word 'vexel' is a mix of words 'vector' and 'pixel'.
2. The difference between vexels and vectors
The most important difference is that vexels are created using raster layers while vectors are created using vector layers.
Rasters are based on pixels (little squares) and each square is given a fixed colour. When you expand it you can see pixelation.
Shapes created using vector layers while expanding stay crisp and don't lose their quality.
Let me explain the difference on this example.

The image above is a vector. When expanding it to 300% it will still stay sharp:

If the same image was created on raster layers it would look blurry after expanding to 300%:

The Definition

Vexel Art:

“Vexel is a neologism for an entirely pixel-based form of raster art that imitates the visual appearance of vector graphics technique (i.e. sharp-edged lines and areas of flat colour or smooth gradient fills). The word itself is a portmanteau derived from a combination of "vector" and "pixel."[1]” - Wipedia.

What is Vector Art?
In digital art there are two layer formats: raster and vector. Raster formats are based in pixels and vector is based in paths and points.
When you resize a raster image, you are expanding the pixels. Your program has to try to estimate what the colours would be for the additional pixels created. Due to this, the image loses it's clarity and creates a pixel effect.

In Digital Art Text Art was the first medium to combine type and illustration. With the release of programs like Photoshop or Illustrator the options to digitally create typographic art have exploded in the last 30 years.

Vexels. What are they?

The word vexel is a mix of words vector and pixel. Vexels are made of solid shapes filled with solid colours or gradients that look like vectors but unlike vectors, vexels are made on raster layers. That means that while expanding vexels lose their quality and vectors don't.

The most popular Vexel programs are Photoshop, Gimp and Painter.

Tools you can use to create a vexel are the pen tool and marquee tool.
